Introduction
The Barrett M95 is a modern anti-material rifle of US origin. It was developed by Barrett in the late 1980's as a cheaper and smaller alternative to the semi-automatic Barrett M82. The M95 started as the M90, but the improved M95 replaced it in production and was produced in larger numbers.
Design
The M95 is a bullpup bolt action sniper rifle. Despite the differences in layout it resembles the semi-automatic M82. The M95 has a similar receiver and stock and the same multi-slotted muzzle brake is fitted. The magazine and bolt-action mechanism are located behind the pistol grip. The scope is fitted on a bracket or Picatinny accessory rail.
Firepower
The M95 fires the 12.7x99mm NATO round from a 5 round box magazine. The M99 is a single shot derivative. Both models are bolt-action operated and have a lower rate of fire than the semi-automatic M82.The M95 and M99 are reported to be somewhat more accurate than the M82. The maximum effective range is 1.800 meters.
Users
The Barrett M95 is sold to many nation for military and law enforcement use. It is less common than the semi-automatic M82, but still used in large numbers. Additionally it is sold for civilian use, mainly on the US market.
Barrett M90
The Barrett M95 is a bolt action bullpup anti-materiel rifle. As such it provides a simpler and less bulky alternative to the semi-automatic Barrett M82. Several variants exist.
M90: Original bullpup bolt-action model derived from the widely used semi-automatic Barrett M82.
M95: Improved M90 with pistol grip placed further forwards, no Picatinny sight rail.
M95SP: M95 with Picatinny sight rail, available in anodized or tan finish. Currently the standard production model. Often referred to without SP suffix.

Barrett M99
The Barrett M99 is a single shot rifle derived from the earlier M95 design. Besides the lack of a detachable magazine the M99 looks very similar to the M95. Unlike the M95 the receiver is made from a single block of aluminum instead of two parts of steel. The bolt differs also in having multiple lugs instead of three. As a single shot weapon the operator has to insert a new round manually while cycling the bolt.
M99: Baseline model with 33-inch barrel. Anodized or tan finish.
M99-1: Shorter model with 29-inch barrel. Anodized or tan finish.
M99: Chambered for .416 Barrett round. No shorter barrel model available.
